Grand Tetons National Park

The Grand Tetons are an amazing mountain range in northwestern Wyoming. A short drive from Yellowstone, if you want to do both, and snuggled up next to Jackson Hole, an area that is defined by the valley close to Jackson, WY. Yes, the name Les Trois Tetons means the Three Breasts.  Guess it was a cold winter when it was named.

We went during the fall and the colors of the trees were magnificent against the mountains. The birch trees turn brilliant gold against the black of the mountains creating astounding landscapes for photographers. There are a number of places where landscapes can be shot with outstanding results.  Oxbend Bow, Snake River, Schwabacher Landing, Aspen Ridge-Boulder Ridge Loop, and Jenny Lake are a few.  Getting there before sunrise gives you a great shot.

During the fall, you will see the elk start to migrate. We encountered a herd on one of the main roads leading to our hotel, Alpenhof Lodge.  This lodge is adorable with vintage German décor. The owners’ pet dog joins you for breakfast, and the restaurant was very good. There are many good restaurants in Jackson, a short drive.

We spent time on Moose-Wilson Road shooting wildlife including bears and moose. The rangers will drive you away from bears, but you can shoot the moose from the road. Another great location was the famous Mormon Row barns which have the mountains as a backdrop. Great location for astrophotography. There were numerous animals around the barns as well.

The cabin used in the movie Shane is another location for bracketing or shooting cowboy cabins. There are additional cabins around the park that you can use for locations. Jenny Lake Lodge provides some good locations for photography including the back deck of the hotel.

In addition to photography, there are a large number of hiking trails, swimming, kayaking, parasailing, and a number of other activities in Jackson including the Jackson Hole National Museum of Wildlife art. There are also a large number of tourists. Be patient. Rent a 4-wheel drive vehicle. Not all roads are open all year long.
